For the second time in a row, the accreditation committee of the College of American Pathologists (CAP), has awarded accreditation to the laboratory of Al Ahsa hospital, for a new cycle of 2 years, based on results of an on-site inspection, on January 10th, 2019 as part of the CAP's Accreditation Program. Our hospital became as one of more than 8,000 CAP-accredited facilities worldwide.

Complementary to the exiting Joint Commission hospital accreditation program granted by the Joint Commission International (JCI), and the accreditation from the Saudi Central Board for Accreditation of Healthcare Institutions (CBAHI), and the International Food Safety Management System (ISO 22000:2005), the CAP certification enables Al Ahsa hospital to provide the highest international standard of excellence in quality laboratory practices.

The CAP Laboratory Accreditation Program is an internationally recognized program and the only one of its kind that utilizes teams of practicing laboratory professionals as inspectors with a goal for improving patient safety by advancing the quality of pathology and laboratory services through education, standard setting, and ensuring that laboratories meet or exceed regulatory requirements and to help laboratories achieve the highest standards of excellence to positively impact patient care.

During the CAP accreditation process, inspectors examine the laboratory and blood bank records, and quality control of procedures for the preceding two years. They also examine staff qualifications, equipment, facilities, safety program and record, and overall management. This stringent inspection program is designed to specifically ensure the highest standard of care, and patient’s lab results accuracy.

Dr Maher Jamal Eddine, the Executive director of the hospital, assured that this accomplishment highlights the high state of patient engagement adopted by the laboratory department and the hospital as a whole, and reflects the commitment we have to the well-being of our community.

He added that the hospital is committed to upholding the highest standards in laboratory safety in order to provide high quality care, and receiving this accreditation allows us to continually improve our processes while increasing the value these services bring to patients.

He said, I would like to say thank you and express my most sincere appreciation to the laboratory’s Chairman, the head of the blood bank, the laboratory’s supervisors, the heads of sections, and all lab professionals for the great job they do on a daily basis, and dedication in providing high–quality laboratory services to our patients and their families, as well as for the achievement of once again being recognized by the College of American Pathology in this stringent accreditation process.

He assured that this achievement comes as the natural outcome for the unstinting support of the Chairman of Al Ahsa Medical Services Co. Mr Abdulmohsen Al Othman which is leading us from one success to another.

He concluded, that the Laboratory is now once more time accredited by the CAP for the next two years. In the interim year, the laboratory is expected to complete a self-assessment which the surveyors will review when they visit again in 2020.
